I am a globally experienced outdoor/adventure education & guiding specialist who brings international training experience to AdventurePro. I possess advanced and varied technical expertise in the outdoor adventure and training fields and the design & development operational and compliance systems for the industry.
Originally training with the International School of Mountaineering (ISM) in Switzerland in the 1990’s, I have subsequently gained a Vocational Level IV Certificate in Outdoor Recreation Instruction from Australia, and all eight mountaineering vocational qualifications available in South Africa. I represented South Africa on the UIAA International Training Standards Commission for 10 years. I am also a PADI Rescue Scuba Diver and Skydiver.
I have been offering National Qualifications as an Assessor/Moderator since 2001, starting Adventure Qualifications Network in 2002. With my wife Michelle, owned two Outdoor Centres in South Africa and managed one in the UK. Prior to entering the Adventure Industry full time in 1992, I was a Fire Officer and Emergency Medic, with a secondary role as Traffic/Peace Officer. Currently qualified as a Wilderness EMT.
I have designed and developed a completely paperless administration system for NVQ (NQF) qualifications provision for Adventure Qualifications Network, which provides formal qualifications for Adventure Professionals, allowing trainers and assessors to complete administrative tasks for these formal qualifications in the field in all weather conditions. This system actively operates with more than nine facilitators spread across the globe in real time allowing fast, efficient and quality assured administration processes. I also designed the Quality Assurance processes which were used to for South Africa’s initial accreditation by the UIAA for its Mountain Training Scheme.
Driven to provide excellent service regarding the sustainable commercial, social and environmental impact of activities with safety and safeguarding as a priority. I have a special interest in getting disabled people into the outdoors and adventure based activities and have served as a technical advisor for a DVD on Rock climbing for people with disabilities. I actively thrive in a challenging and varied environment and have travelled extensively in remote areas of: Africa, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, Morocco, Malta and the European Alps.
